How does the 2026 WRX drive?

The first ten minutes were a refreshing reminder of the things I actually care about in a machine. Sure, other cars are faster. Sure, other cars get better gas mileage. But the steering is light and direct, the car corners flat, and the grip is incredible.

The turbo spools up nice and the thing just pulls to redline. Other publications might want more power or a better zero to sixty. I do not. 271 horsepower is plenty here, the 2.4 has torque everywhere, and the gearing is excellent. The clutch is light and communicative, and while the throws are not Honda direct, they are better than the outgoing car. It is also a really easy manual to drive, which matters more than enthusiasts admit. Traffic in this car is a non-event.

Is the base WRX too stripped?

No, and that is the point. The only things I missed in a week were heated seats and maybe the audio system. The beauty of the base model is it gives you the car at a price you can build on. Want more power? Go get it, you have the budget. Want more luxury? Go get it, you have the budget. The base is the platform you need if you are buying a WRX in the first place, a car bought at an accessible price that you modify, personalize, and make your own.

WRX base vs Elantra N, Civic Si, and GR Corolla

The Elantra N is close in price but a lot more aggressive, a harder drive, and less convenient to live with. The Civic Si has a lot less power and a lot more efficiency. The GR Corolla is great, and it is the hatchback we all want, but it is so much more expensive than this car, and that is comparing the Core to the base WRX. The Golf R is more expensive still. Civic Type R and Integra Type S, same conversation. There are more expensive WRXs too, and the argument changes up there. At the base price, this is tough to beat.

What is the WRX like to live with every day?

The sport suspension is firm at times, and a GTI or a Mazda 3 rides more compliantly. But the WRX balances flat cornering against a harsh ride really well, and it is perfectly liveable every day on Massachusetts roads. My pregnant wife was not loving the ride from the front seat at times. If we were in an Elantra N, we probably would have gotten a divorce.

How is the tech, and does EyeSight annoy you with a manual?

The 11.6-inch screen is garbage. Totally rental grade. If this car had the new system from the Outback it would be impossible to beat. My advice: connect wireless CarPlay or Android Auto immediately and use your phone. Set your music and your GPS before you pull away, touch the screen only for track changes, and preserve your sanity.

EyeSight is the opposite story. The radar cruise and lane centering work well, it steps in properly when the car ahead is going a lot slower than you, and you can turn the nanny completely off, which is brilliant.

Is the WRX good for car seats?

The back seat is perfectly fine. The car seat goes in easy and the door opening is massive. I am six feet tall and I can sit behind my own driving position, and the front seat lives comfortably ahead of the car seat. The trunk is huge. A full-size stroller goes in with room to spare.

What MPG does the 2026 WRX get?

I saw 22 to 23 mpg against an EPA rating of 19 city, 26 highway, 22 combined. This is permanent all-wheel drive, so the number suffers for it, but the wet and snow traction is incredible. In New England, that is a trade you make without thinking.

The take

In a world where the average new car costs $49,000, a $33,690 performance sedan proves that if you are a parent and an enthusiast, you can still have fun, and you can do it in a way that does not make you feel bad about the money. This car reminds you of all the things you actually need in a car, because it does not have the things you do not.

It is the same argument that made the Ford Ranger 2.7 the sweet spot of midsize trucks, and it is why the Kia K4 hatchback got so close to special on a budget. Buy the honest version, spend the difference on what you actually want. If you like watching a whole segment get sorted, the midsize truck ranking shows how we do it.

This car is perfect for the enthusiast parent, or just the enthusiast, who wants all the car they need for a price they crave.
